While on the topic of logo design, we thought we’d share with you the new logo chosen for the 2012 London Olympics. It was just recently unveiled and has since been generating lots of backlash from those that dislike the design. The company commissioned to create the logo said that they were striving to appeal to the “Internet generation,” however, many people are saying that the logo fails to appeal to anyone at all….

In our previous post, we asked readers to re-evaluate their business’ logo by answering three questions. Here, we show an example of that exercise by assessing the new Olympics logo –

Is the logo simple and something that is easily identifiable to the target market? Other than the Olympic rings, there is nothing in the logo that you immediately recognize. Even reading the “2012″ is somewhat difficult.

Does the logo immediately convey what purpose it serves? No. A person should be able to understand a logo after just one quick glance, however, this one requires some studying. In this design, the elements do not come together easily to illustrate the message.

Are the power of color and typography used effectively? The font choice is obviously lacking. In addition, the Olympic rings are simply white and do not represent the primary-colored rings the world has been used to seeing, which further makes the logo harder to identify.

It appears that the design company that created the logo made an attempt to go outside-the-box. Such fearlessness should be admired, especially for a project of such importance as the upcoming Olympic logo. However, this seems to be a case of “too much of a good thing,” and the result is a design that fails to achieve its objective.

A distinct and original logo design is absolutely essential for any business. An effective logo will help to grow your brand and make a lasting visual impression on current and potential customers. Here’s three questions to ask yourself when determining whether or not your current business logo needs an overhaul:

Is our logo simple and something that is easily identifiable to our target market?

Does our logo immediately convey our business and what purpose it serves?

Are we using the power of color and typography most effectively?

Having a blog is an effective way to bring repeat visitors to your web site. Readers are enticed by regularly updated content and the open communication (ie: comment sections). With continued effort, your blog can build itself into a community-like publicity outlet for you and your business.

The first step in achieving this is to have a well-designed blog. Here’s a list of the top five rules to keep in mind:

1) Simplicity. There are tons of widgets, plug-ins, etc. that you can add to your blog. However, be careful! You do not want to overload your web site with these additional features. If you go overboard, your readers will just end up distracted or annoyed by all the clutter. Choose sidebar features wisely and keep it to a bare minimum.

2) Easy Navigation. Make sure your navigation links are in a very obvious place, such as across the header or at the top of either sidebar. You don’t want your readers to have to go searching for page links.

3 Chose the Right Color Scheme. Pick a color scheme that coordinates with your theme, logo, whatever….but make sure that it is pleasing to the eye and allows content to be easily read. Having a white background with dark colored text is preferred.

4) Easy to Identify. Within their first 5 seconds of visiting your blog, your readers should be able to tell what the site is about. You can accomplish this by making sure your headline and/or tagline is prominent at the top of the page. It is also a good idea to include a small description.

5) Include feed links. More and more people today are taking advantage of feeds. To benefit from this, make sure to include links to your blog’s feed. Display them in attention-grabbing locations with wording along the lines of “Subscribe to our blog” or “Receive notification when we update our blog.”
